Our Journal
We received the caterpillars in the mail from Insect Lore on February 10, 2006. They arrived in 2 plastic cups that had yellow stuff (food disc) on the bottom and a paper disc on the top. The caterpillars, which are also called larva, were very small when they arrived. They were only about 1/2” long. They grew fast. It only took a few days for them to get large and begin making their cocoons. It was cool. The larvae attached themselves to the top of the cup and wiggled and spun until they were covered completely, except for one small piece which was left out of the cocoon and eventually fell off.. In a cocoon, they are called pupae. They were all pupae on February 20, 2006. The change from egg to beautiful butterfly is called metamorphosis – or we’re calling it, morphing.
