Five Kernels of Corn

‘Twas the year of the famine in Plymouth of old,
The ice and the snow from the thatched roofs had rolled;
Through the warm purple skies steered the geese o’er the seas,
And the woodpeckers tapped in the clocks of the trees;
And the boughs on the slopes to the south winds lay bare,
and dreaming of summer, the buds swelled in the air.
The pale Pilgrims welcomed each reddening morn;
There were left but for rations Five Kernels of Corn.
Five Kernels of Corn!
Five Kernels of Corn!
But to Bradford a feast were Five Kernels of Corn!

“Five Kernels of Corn! Five Kernels of Corn!
Ye people, be glad for Five Kernels of Corn!”
So Bradford cried out on bleak Burial Hill,
And the thin women stood in their doors, white and still.
“Lo, the harbor of Plymouth rolls bright in the Spring,
The maples grow red, and the wood robins sing,
The west wind is blowing, and fading the snow,
And the pleasant pines sing, and arbutuses blow.
Five Kernels of Corn!
Five Kernels of Corn!
To each one be given Five Kernels of Corn!”

O Bradford of Austerfield hast on thy way,
The west winds are blowing o’er Provincetown Bay,
The white avens bloom, but the pine domes are chill,
And new graves have furrowed Precisioners’ Hill!
“Give thanks, all ye people, the warm skies have come,
The hilltops are sunny, and green grows the holm,
And the trumpets of winds, and the white March is gone,
Five Kernels of Corn!
Five Kernels of Corn!
Ye have for Thanksgiving Five Kernels of Corn!

“The raven’s gift eat and be humble and pray,
A new light is breaking and Truth leads your way;
One taper a thousand shall kindle; rejoice
That to you has been given the wilderness voice!”
O Bradford of Austerfield, daring the wave,
And safe through the sounding blasts leading the brave,
Of deeds such as thine was the free nation born,
And the festal world sings the “Five Kernels of Corn.”
Five Kernels of Corn!
Five Kernels of Corn!
The nation gives thanks for Five Kernels of Corn!
To the Thanksgiving Feast bring Five Kernels of Corn!

Apalachicola Estuary: A Day in Pictures

The skull of a whale

Beavers are an important part of our environment.

Snakes and bones, oh my!

Fresh water turtle in the estuary aquarium.

Poison berries.

Tiki

Bea-U-ti-ful flower

Marsh turtle

Oyster shells are an important part of the estuary. In order for an oyster to grow, it must attach itself to a rock or oyster bed. The oyster beds also provide nutrients, safety and shelter for other microscopic marine life.

Microscopic worm

Boy stuff.

The Monarch butterflies were everywhere. Unfortunately many died due to tragic traffic accidents.

The brackish water is brown. It is not dirty water. It is nutrient-rich water. Even the silt on the bottom is black.

They are dredging the brackish water in search of unique specimens.

I cannot remember if this is a jellyfish or a worm pod. They look very similar.

Let’s Talk About ‘Your Self’

I had begin this post with a personal recount of 2006-2007 and how I believe a woman can regain her self-esteem. But, then I scrapped the whole idea. Let’s face it, it was sappy, emotional, pitiful and really … it just sucked!

So here is the new version of why I think the number one reason why women fall apart is because they are trying too hard to be a good Mommy. Now before you get your panties all twisted up, let’s ponder this for a moment:

I have 5 boys. In a marriage that sucked, those boys were my everything. They were #1, and #1, and #1, and #1, and #1. Dh was #6 and I was always last – and I looked every bit the part of a woman who was last. I was frumpy. I was a martyr. I was happy only if my children and my husband were happy. I would forgo makeup and got to the point where I just slapped my hair up into an ugly ponytail/bun every day. Really, who in their right mind would think I had time to fuss with myself?

I learned an ugly lesson this year. Uglier than my own physical appearance. I learned that I had my priorities all mixed up. I was supposed to be #1 (but not in the selfish sense). I was supposed to take care of myself, my one and only earthly body, so that I could care for those gifted to me.

Quite simply, I had forgotten (or chosen to table the fact) that I am a daughter of God and he made me for a reason. I was not honoring His wishes. I was not honoring my ‘self’.

This will be the first of many posts of the lessons I learned about Honoring My Self. I hope you’ll follow along as I meander through a garden of ideas about being beautiful – inside and out.
